For each standard, break it down into Learning Outcomes which can be covered with a single lesson. Show how the Learning Outcomes build up to the Standards. If there are multiple ways of breaking down a standard, show the different options.

### Educational Standards
{{Standard}}

#### Example
- **Educational Standard**: "Students will understand the concept of fractions and be able to compare and order them."

---

## **Option 1: Building Conceptual Understanding and Comparison Skills Sequentially**

1. **Learning Outcome 1**: Identify and define fractions as parts of a whole.
   - *Lesson*: Introduce the concept of fractions by using visual aids (e.g., pizza slices, shaded parts of shapes) to help students understand that fractions represent parts of a whole.

2. **Learning Outcome 2**: Recognize and write fractions with numerators and denominators.
   - *Lesson*: Teach students to read, write, and interpret fractions, emphasizing the numerator and denominator.

3. **Learning Outcome 3**: Compare fractions with the same denominator.
   - *Lesson*: Using visual models and number lines, guide students to compare fractions that share a denominator, helping them see how the numerator affects the fraction's value.

4. **Learning Outcome 4**: Compare fractions with different denominators by finding equivalent fractions.
   - *Lesson*: Introduce equivalent fractions, and provide strategies (like finding common denominators) for comparing fractions with different denominators.

5. **Learning Outcome 5**: Order a set of fractions from least to greatest.
   - *Lesson*: Use both visual models and number lines to help students practice ordering fractions, reinforcing their understanding of fraction values and relationships.

6. **Learning Outcome 6**: Solve real-world problems involving the comparison and ordering of fractions.

---

## **Option 2: Emphasizing Comparison and Ordering through Real-World Application**

1. **Learning Outcome 1**: Understand and represent fractions using visual models.
   - *Lesson*: Start with visuals (e.g., dividing objects) to show fractions as parts of a whole, ensuring students grasp what fractions represent.

2. **Learning Outcome 2**: Use fractions to represent parts of real-world objects and scenarios.
   - *Lesson*: Apply fraction concepts to real-world contexts, such as dividing food or sharing resources, to solidify understanding.

3. **Learning Outcome 3**: Compare and contrast fractions using benchmark fractions (e.g., 1/2, 1/4).
   - *Lesson*: Introduce benchmark fractions to help students develop an intuitive sense of size when comparing fractions.

4. **Learning Outcome 4**: Order fractions by estimating and comparing to benchmarks.
   - *Lesson*: Have students practice ordering fractions, comparing each to familiar benchmarks, and arranging them on a number line.

5. **Learning Outcome 5**: Apply knowledge of fractions to compare and order in problem-solving contexts.
   - *Lesson*: Challenge students with complex, real-world problems that require comparing and ordering fractions, pushing them to think critically and apply all previous skills.

---

## **Option 3: Parallel Focus on Fractions’ Conceptual and Operational Aspects**

1. **Learning Outcome 1**: Define and represent fractions as parts of a whole or a set.
   - *Lesson*: Teach students that fractions can represent parts of a single object or a group of objects, using varied examples to illustrate.

2. **Learning Outcome 2**: Develop understanding of equivalent fractions.
   - *Lesson*: Show students different representations of the same fraction (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4) to reinforce the idea of equivalency.

3. **Learning Outcome 3**: Compare fractions with the same or different denominators using equivalency.
   - *Lesson*: Guide students through comparing fractions with or without common denominators by finding equivalent fractions or using visual aids.

4. **Learning Outcome 4**: Place fractions on a number line to build ordering skills.
   - *Lesson*: Teach students to use a number line for ordering fractions, emphasizing spatial reasoning and fraction size comparison.

5. **Learning Outcome 5**: Combine skills in real-world scenarios, comparing and ordering fractions.
   - *Lesson*: Present complex problems requiring both comparison and ordering skills, prompting students to use equivalent fractions, number lines, and benchmarks in problem-solving.

# You will be graded on the following multi-part rubric, so aim to score high across all of these:

## I. Quality of Individual Learning Outcomes

### 1. Clarity
**How clearly does the learning outcome communicate what students are expected to know, understand, or do?**

- **Low:** The outcome is vague, ambiguous, or overly broad. It is difficult to determine what students are expected to learn or do.
- **Moderate:** The general learning intention is understandable, but some language is vague, undefined, or open to multiple interpretations.
- **High:** The outcome clearly identifies the intended student learning and uses precise language appropriate to the content and context.
- **Distinguished:** The outcome communicates the intended learning with exceptional precision, making the target readily understandable to educators and students without unnecessary wording or ambiguity.

### 2. Assessability
**How readily can achievement of the learning outcome be observed or assessed?**

- **Low:** The outcome relies primarily on unobservable language such as *understand, know,* or *appreciate*, with little indication of what successful performance would look like.
- **Moderate:** The outcome suggests observable learning, but the expected evidence of learning remains somewhat unclear.
- **High:** The outcome describes knowledge or performance that can be directly demonstrated and assessed.
- **Distinguished:** The outcome makes the expected evidence of learning especially clear, allowing educators to readily determine what student performance would demonstrate successful attainment.

### 3. Scope
**Is the amount of learning represented by the outcome appropriately bounded?**

- **Low:** The outcome is substantially too broad, too narrow, or combines several distinct learning goals that would be difficult to teach or assess as one outcome.
- **Moderate:** The outcome is generally manageable but may contain multiple components or be somewhat mismatched to the expected instructional time.
- **High:** The outcome represents a coherent and appropriately sized unit of learning for the instructional context.
- **Distinguished:** The outcome is precisely scoped, capturing a meaningful unit of learning while avoiding unnecessary fragmentation or the bundling of distinct goals.

### 4. Cognitive Demand
**Does the learning outcome call for an appropriate and meaningful level of thinking?**

- **Low:** The outcome requires primarily recall or recognition when deeper thinking is warranted, or its cognitive demand is unclear.
- **Moderate:** The outcome requires some meaningful processing but may emphasize relatively routine explanation, identification, or application.
- **High:** The outcome calls for an appropriate level of reasoning, application, analysis, or other disciplinary thinking given the learning goal.
- **Distinguished:** The outcome intentionally targets sophisticated disciplinary thinking and asks students to integrate, reason with, evaluate, transfer, or otherwise use knowledge in meaningful ways appropriate to the context.

---

# II. Quality of the Learning Outcomes as a Set

### 5. Coherence
**How well do the learning outcomes work together toward a unified learning goal?**

- **Low:** The outcomes appear largely disconnected or resemble a collection of loosely related topics and activities.
- **Moderate:** Most outcomes relate to the same general topic, but their relationship to one another or to a larger learning goal is not consistently clear.
- **High:** The outcomes form a coherent set in which each contributes meaningfully to a shared learning goal or conceptual understanding.
- **Distinguished:** The outcomes form a tightly integrated learning architecture in which the relationship among outcomes and their contribution to a larger understanding or capability is clear and intentional.

### 6. Progression
**How effectively do the outcomes build toward increasingly sophisticated learning?**

- **Low:** Outcomes are primarily parallel or disconnected, with little evidence that later learning builds on earlier learning.
- **Moderate:** Some progression is evident, but substantial portions of the sequence remain at a similar level of knowledge or cognitive demand.
- **High:** The outcomes generally build from foundational knowledge or skills toward more complex understanding, reasoning, or application.
- **Distinguished:** The sequence represents a purposeful learning progression in which students systematically develop, connect, and use increasingly sophisticated knowledge and capabilities.

### 7. Coverage
**How completely do the outcomes represent the important learning within the intended domain or topic?**

- **Low:** Major concepts, skills, relationships, or applications central to the intended learning are absent.
- **Moderate:** The outcomes address the major topic areas but leave meaningful gaps in important concepts, relationships, or applications.
- **High:** The outcomes provide strong coverage of the important knowledge, concepts, and capabilities needed for the intended learning.
- **Distinguished:** The outcomes provide comprehensive yet focused coverage, capturing not only essential knowledge but also important relationships, reasoning, and applications without unnecessary expansion.

### 8. Distinctiveness
**Does each learning outcome make a distinct contribution to the overall learning goal?**

- **Low:** Multiple outcomes substantially overlap, repeat one another, or differ mainly in wording rather than intended learning.
- **Moderate:** Most outcomes are distinguishable, although some overlap or fragmentation exists.
- **High:** Each outcome represents a clearly distinguishable component of learning that contributes to the larger set.
- **Distinguished:** The outcomes divide the intended learning into an especially clean and purposeful structure, minimizing redundancy while preserving meaningful distinctions among concepts and capabilities.
