**In Engage**, aim to spark curiosity and surface students’ existing ideas before you teach anything new. Use a compelling phenomenon, question, or quick task that invites predictions and reveals misconceptions (a short prompt, discussion routine, or “What do you notice/wonder?”). A strong Engage ends with a clear investigable question or problem and gives you information about what students think—not definitions, notes, or front-loaded vocabulary.

**In Explore**, let students generate shared experiences and evidence. Plan for students to observe, test, sort, model, collect data, or compare cases in ways that make their thinking visible (tables, sketches, models, claims). Your role is to circulate, listen, and probe with questions that keep students focused on evidence (“What patterns do you see?” “What would count as evidence?”). If the Explore can be completed without students making sense of evidence, it likely needs redesign.

**In Explain**, start with student explanations, then formalize. Build in routines where students use Explore evidence to propose claims and reasoning, critique one another’s ideas, and revise. Only after students have put forward explanations should you introduce precise language, canonical models, and direct instruction—explicitly tying terms back to what students observed and addressing misconceptions you heard in Engage/Explore.

**In Elaborate**, design for transfer: the same idea in a new context. Good Elaborate tasks push students to apply concepts to a novel scenario, new dataset, or different phenomenon, and to connect ideas across situations. This phase is where depth grows—students extend, refine, and generalize rather than repeat the original activity with new numbers.

**In Evaluate**, treat assessment as ongoing evidence-gathering, not a single end-of-lesson quiz. Include quick checks throughout the cycle (observations, exit tickets, annotated models, concept maps, short written explanations), and end with a performance that demonstrates understanding and practice use. Build in student reflection and self/peer assessment so learners can articulate what changed in their thinking and what evidence supports it.

**Across all phases**, the simplest quality test is coherence: each phase has a distinct purpose, and later phases explicitly use products from earlier ones (Engage ideas feed Explore; Explore evidence feeds Explain; Explain understanding enables Elaborate transfer; Evaluate samples thinking throughout). If you see teacher talk replacing sensemaking, or “worksheets first” replacing investigation, treat those as design red flags and adjust the phase so students are doing the intellectual work.
