SMOG estimates the U.S. reading grade needed to understand English prose by counting words of three or more syllables and scaling their frequency to a 30-sentence sample. Each occurrence of a polysyllabic word counts. The calculator requires at least three sentences; passages shorter than 30 sentences receive a short-passage estimate note. Results include word and sentence counts and actions to lower or raise the reading level. Consider readers' background knowledge, subject familiarity, and text organization alongside the estimate.

Analyzes text to determine its FK readability level

FKGL (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level) is a readability measure that estimates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand a piece of text. It is calculated using sentence length and word complexity, with higher scores generally indicating more difficult reading material. Teachers can use FKGL as a quick screening tool to check whether instructional texts, assignments, and communications are broadly appropriate for students’ reading levels, while also considering factors such as vocabulary knowledge, background knowledge, text structure, and individual learner needs.

Flesch-Kincaid Reading Level

Estimates reading-grade bands using the Dale–Chall formula, with vocabulary statistics and reading-level rewrite actions.

Estimates the U.S. reading-grade band for English prose using sentence length and familiar vocabulary. Reports the raw Dale–Chall score, sentence statistics, and difficult-word percentage.
